secretary hagel is a good man. i am a great admirer of the time he spent in vietnam, and the sacrifices he made. while this service is commendable, his nomination should be decided by the totality of his record. it is the votes he has cast and the statements he has made that will inform us as to his judgment, his view of america's role in the world, and his view of the military requirement to support that role. as i told senator hagel in my office some time ago, over two weeks ago, after a long and careful review of his record, the things he has said, and the things i have personally experienced with him, we are too philosophically opposed on the pressing issues facing our country, and therefore i told him i would not be supporting his nomination. his record demonstrates what i view as a lack of his steadfast opposition to policies that diminish u.s. power and influence throughout the world, as well as a recent trend of policy reversals based on political expediency rather than on core beliefs. with many of the sec

chairman and senator hagel. it has been a long day and i appreciate your answers to these questions. when we spoke last week we talked somewhat about the sequester and the budget concerns and the concerns of our nuclear forces. being from nebraska you understand the importance of stress com and its mission as it deals with the deterrence that we use in this country and what we've used for many, many years. i believe it is very, very successful. today, you also in your opening discussed the need to modernize our defensive forces. you spoke to senator blunt and blumenthal about modernizing our navy. i would like to hear your thought process. how are we going to do this? where is the money coming from? how are you going to advise the president in making these decisions? we're looking at sequester, we're looking at budget constraints. how does this all tie together? what would be your advice to the president on how the pentagon is going to address all of those budget constraints? wherel, let's start with we are. the

i happen to be in the hagel hearings, and you talked about the iraq surged and needing one vote. i remember the mccain-kennedy immigration reform vote when you needed a last vote, and it did not come. you have been struggling along time about the future face of the country. when to solve a lot of insoluble problems. we are back at it. i am interested in how this will play out between you and president obama. how will you get it done this time? >> i think we will. by the way, and when we are doing immigration, i think of ted kennedy all the time. >> is there a ted kennedy up there today? >> no one of his stature on either side. take kenneth d. and i have gone nose to nose on the floor of the senate -- ted kennedy and i have gone nose to nose on the floor of the senate, literally, walked off, and said, "did a pretty good, didn't we?" he gave his word and he kept his word. that is not as abundant a commodity as some civics students might think. what has changed? i think a number of things have changed. we have made significant improvements on border security. that was a key issue to

i wish obama would have talked about chuck hagel's nomination for secretary of defense. i think it is sickening that senators like mccain, they have blackened his nomination. i think he is the best person that the time to be secretary of defense. i think mccain has a ven debt that against him. that's about it. i love this idea about tragse minimum wage. that was probably the best thing he said tonight. thank you. >> rick in virginia and he is a republican. good evening. caller: how are you? >> good. caller: first of all, let's talk about the i.r.s. and taxes. first of all, i think the i.r.s. should abolish them period. they will put a surcharge on everything. if you're a billionaire and you spend $1 billion you get taxed on it. if you come into the country illegally, you're getting taxed. i look at our government as what they are doing right now as far as retirement is concerned. they get the full paycheck no matter if they work or not. i think that is totally incorrect. it should not be like that. it should be like any other person. why should my social security money p

georgetown professor that the president has nominated to serve as the next secretary of defense, chuck hagel, and i am confident and i've expressed that confidence publicly that the men and women of the department of defense will have the kind of advocate they need as the nation emerges from more than a decade of war. lastly, i'm honored to be here, as i said, as a catholic and as a proud graduate of another jesuit institution, santa clara university. my time in the university's undergraduate and law school, in many ways shaped the rest of my life as this education will shape the rest of your lives. i remain deeply thankful to the jesuits for the outstanding education that i received. having gone through seven years of philosophy and syllogisms and theology and cannon law, i have been blessed by all the grace and skepticism that jesuits can give. more importantly, i've been shaped by what i believe is their pragmatic approach to life and to faith and to the issues in general. it was that education and my catholic upbringing, particularly as the son of italian immigrants, that instilled in me
